Why I Voted Against the Intelligence Authorization Act

Today the House of Representatives approved the Intelligence Authorization Act (H.R. 2701).  The vote was 235 to 168.  I voted against the measure because it included language that would provide "Miranda" warnings for terrorists.  I have repeatedly stated my opposition to treating terrorists as if they are common criminals.  They are not.

Terrorists are extremists who want to kill Americans anywhere they can.  Most are not Americans and they do not deserve the protection of our Constitution, or any other right that our government grants to American citizens.

I have said that the Obama Administration is making a big mistake in trying terrorists in civilian courts.  That is why I introduced the "Military Tribunals for Terrorists Act."  We must be able to extract vital information from terrorists and stop tying the hands of our intelligences officers.  The main job of the United States Government is to protect the American people.  The government must stop treating terrorists like common criminals and start treating them like the enemy combatants that they are.
